Real-Time Tsunami Forecasting: Challenges and Solutions
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new method for real-time tsunami forecasting will provide NOAA’s Tsunami Warning Centers with forecast guidance tools during an actual tsunami event. PMEL has developed the methodology of combining real-time data from tsunameters with numerical model estimates to provide siteand event-specific forecasts for tsunamis in real time. An overview of the technique and testing of this methodology is presented.

Abstract Today, the world has reached a new nature with advances in science. The Internet of Things is a technology that can connect all objects in different fields through the Internet. Any unforeseen event that destroys economic, social and physical capabilities and inflicts human and financial losses is known as a natural disaster, such as a tsunami. IoT-based tsunami forecasting system ...
متن کاملTsunami Forecast by Joint Inversion of Real-Time Tsunami Waveforms and Seismic or GPS Data: Application to the Tohoku 2011 Tsunami
Correctly characterizing tsunami source generation is the most critical component of modern tsunami forecasting. Although difficult to quantify directly, a tsunami source can be modeled via different methods using a variety of measurements from deep-ocean tsunameters, seismometers, GPS, and other advanced instruments, some of which in or near real time. Here we assess the performance of differe...

Since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the most destructive tsunami in recorded history, worldwide awareness of tsunami hazard has peaked and global expansion of tsunami forecasting tools has made dramatic progress in both instruments and technology. Two of the most seminal advances in tsunami forecast since the Indian Ocean tsunami are: 1) the deployment of an extensive network of sensors to acq...

This report describes an R&D activity conducted during FY 1998 to develop tsunami forecasting tools for the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC). The activity included analytical and numerical sensitivity studies of tsunami wave characteristics offshore of Hawaii, for ranges of earthquake source parameters in the Alaska-Aleutian Subduction Zone (AASZ); this region is a major source of destructive tsun...

Indian Ocean (2004) Tsunami and following tragic consequences demonstrated lack of relevant experience and preparedness among involved coastal nations. After the event, scientific and forecasting circles of affected countries have started a capacity building to tackle similar problems in the future. Different approaches have been used for tsunami propagation, such as Boussinesq and Nonlinear Sh...
